Eamon O'Keeffe

Eamon O'Keeffe is a partner at Beresh Cunningham. He is a member of the Alberta Criminal Trial Lawyers Association and Canadian Council of Criminal Defence Lawyers. He joined Beresh Cunningham in 1996.

Professional Background

Mr. O'Keeffe received his Bachelor of Arts degree, with honours, in 1992. From 1992-1995 he attended the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan, focussing his studies on criminal law, procedure and evidence. He received the Silas Halyk Prize in criminal law while at the college.

After earning his law degree in 1995, Mr. O'Keeffe articled at the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal in Regina from 1995-1996. Again, criminal law formed the focus of Mr. O'Keeffe's education at the Court, with an emphasis on criminal appeal procedure and practice.

Mr. O'Keeffe was admitted to the bar in Saskatchewan in 1996 and moved to Edmonton, where he joined Beresh Cunningham as an articling student the same year. He became a practicing member of the Law Society of Alberta in 1997.

Current Practice

Since joining Beresh Cunningham, Mr. O'Keeffe has practiced exclusively in the area of criminal defence law. He has assisted a wide range of corporate and individual clients both at trial and through negotiated resolutions to their criminal charges. He has extensive experience and success in conducting jury trials on serious charges.

Mr. O'Keeffe has successfully defended his clients in prosecutions under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and Narcotic Control Act, federal tax legislation, provincial motor vehicle charges and regulatory legislation, as well as on a wide variety of Criminal Code charges, including:

  • murder
  • sexual assault
  • robbery and other crimes of violence
  • weapons offences
  • fraud & property crimes
  • driving offences

He is experienced in litigating Charter of Rights issues to protect his clients from illegal searches and seizures and other violations of their rights.

Impaired Driving

A substantial portion of Mr. O'Keeffe's criminal defence practice consists of impaired driving defence. He fights to preserve his clients' driving privileges and permit them to maintain their employment through his defence of impaired driving charges in the Courts and representation before the Alberta Transportation Safety Board.
